Bank Robbers Kill Policeman, Take Hostages, Melt Into Church Festival

HAMBURG, Germany (AP) _ Four bank robbers shot and killed a Danish policeman and took two German border guards hostage before disappearing into a crowd at a church festival in Hamburg on Saturday, police said.

The bandits stole a car in Paris on Friday, drove it to the northern Danish city of Aarhus and robbed a bank of about $107,000, a German police spokesman said.

Armed with hand grenades, automatic rifles and a pistol, they killed a 41-year-old motorcycle policeman who was chasing them, Danish police said.

The robbers drove 110 miles south to the German border and kidnapped two border guards, then stopped a car, forced out the driver and locked one of the officers in the car’s trunk.

During a 100-mile trip to Hamburg, the desperados hijacked a truck, ditching the car with the border guard in its trunk, said Hartmut Kapp, a Hamburg police spokesman. They released the truck driver and the second border guard in Hamburg, and hijacked a taxi that dropped them at a fairgrounds where some 100,000 Protestants were gathered for a national church festival.

There were no arrests by late Saturday.
