Venezuela extradites drug trafficker to Italy
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela’s government has extradited to Italy a convicted drug trafficker on the run from his native country for almost two decades.
Officials say 65-year-old Vito Genco was arrested last month near a shopping center in Valencia. They say he was convicted in absentia by an Italian appeals court in the mid-1990s of helping smuggle 11 tons of cocaine from Colombia.
Venezuelan authorities didn’t say how long Genco was in the country or what he was doing there.
The United States has long accused Venezuela’s socialist government of not cooperating in the war on drugs. But President Nicolas Maduro has said drug busts have multiplied since his predecessor, Hugo Chavez, ended cooperation with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in 2005.
