BISD election hotly contested
Fourteen candidates will vie for three positions in the Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees election to be held Nov. 12.
The deadline to file as a candidate was 5 p.m. Monday. Candidates then drew for positions on the ballot in a 5:30 drawing in the board room of the BISD administration building at 1900 Price Road.
The election will be held the same day as the general election for national, state and local offices.
For Position 1, former board member Catalina Presas-Garcia drew the top spot on the ballot, followed by Jose Valdez, former BISD public information officer Drue Brown, incumbent and current board president Cesar Lopez, Mark Cortez and Tim Ramirez.
For Position 2, current board vice president Carlos Elizondo drew the top spot, followed by former board member Luci B. Longoria, Erasmo Castro and Herman Otis Powers Jr., also a former board member.
For Position 3, Randy Gonzales drew the top spot, followed by incumbent Joe A. Rodriguez, Dr. Prisci Roca Tipton and Jorge Valdez.
Board positions do not represent any particular geographic area, but rather BISD as a whole.
