Lake Delton fire destroys apartment building, damage estimate at $1.5 million
A fire April 10 destroyed a two-story apartment building under construction, with initial damage estimates at $1.5 million. The building is a complete loss, burning to the ground.
The Lake Delton Fire Department was notified of a structure fire at 85C Grand Canyon Drive at about 3:11 a.m. April 10. The blaze was contained by 3:45 a.m.
Lake Delton Fire Chief Darren Jorgenson said that the blaze was easily contained as the building had no drywall, furniture, or residents. There were no construction workers on site when the fire started.
“The apartment building had uncovered and unprotected wood, they hadn’t put up drywall yet, so the fire was allowed to grow quickly,” Jorgenson said. “It was aided by the wind too, so it grew fast.”
Officials reported that there were no injuries to residents or fire department personnel in the fire. There was also no damage to any neighboring resident property or vehicles. Neighboring apartment buildings were temporarily evacuated “out of an abundance of caution,” according to officials.
The address is located near the intersection of Hillman Road and Bunker Road, in the Lake Delton Apartment Homes.
Jorgenson said about 40 firefighters worked to combat the fire. The Kilbourn Fire Department, La Valle Fire Department, Lyndon Station Fire Department, Mauston Fire Department, Baraboo Fire Department, North Freedom Fire Department, Wisconsin Dells Ranger Station, Dells-Delton EMS, Baraboo District Ambulance Service, Lake Delton Police Department, State Patrol, Sauk County Sheriff’s Department, Salvation Army, and Alliant Energy were also on scene.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
