The 11th-seeded Lady Bears last made it this far in 2001 behind now-assistant coach Jackie Stiles during the team’s historic Final Four run. Notre Dame and Baylor cruised to easy victories. Six seeds UCLA and South Dakota State also pulled off surprising wins, beating Maryland and Syracuse, respectively, on their home courts. There are 32 conferences in Division I basketball. For those leagues outside the wealthiest, having a team pull an NCAA Tournament upset or land an at-large bid to the Big Dance is like winning the lottery. At the mid-major level, that money often funds conference-wide initiatives to improve the quality of basketball, giving teams in those leagues a better chance to be the next Cinderella team. OAKLAND, Calif. _ Former Oakland Raiders running back and AFL all-time leading rusher Clem Daniels has died at age 83. The team announced Daniels’ death late Monday night but did not give a cause. Daniels played nine seasons of pro football starting with the Dallas Texans of the AFL in 1960. He spent his next seven seasons with the Raiders where he had his greatest success before finishing his career with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL in 1968. SENT: 150 words, with photos.
