Man who stole baby Jesus from church nativity arrested
BAYONNE, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey police say they’ve arrested a man who is accused of stealing a baby Jesus statue from a church nativity scene.
Bayonne police Capt. Joseph Scerbo says the 54-year-old man was charged with theft Thursday. The Jersey Journal reports police said a review of surveillance footage shows the suspect stealing the baby Jesus from St. Vincent de Paul Church on Jan. 8.
Authorities say the suspect was also arrested on three outstanding warrants and was remanded to an area jail.
Scerbo says the baby Jesus has been returned to the church. Church officials had previously said the theft would cost over $500 to fix, as a baby Jesus figure could not be purchased separately.
