Jan Stephenson will not play in this week’s United Virginia Bank C
SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) _ Jan Stephenson will not play in this week’s United Virginia Bank Classic tournament because of injuries she suffered in an automobile accident in Florida Saturday night, her husband said.
Ed Vossler, Stephenson’s husband, called a representative of Bobick’s-Nevada Bob’s Golf Store in Virginia Beach Monday night and canceled today’s scheduled appearance by Stephenson, The Virginian-Pilot reported today.
Vossler also told the representative that his wife would not be at the Sleepy Hole Golf Course in Suffolk for the 54-hole, $250,000 tournament that begins Friday, the newspaper said.
Officials at LPGA headquarters in Texas could not confirm that Stephenson had withdrawn. Under the organization’s rules, she has until 30 minuts before her tee-off time Friday to make the announcement final.
Stephenson, who won the UVB tournament in 1981, suffered a sprained back, a dislocated rib and scalp cuts Saturday night in a three-car collision caused, authorities said, by another motorist who ran a red light near St. Petersburg.
Stephenson had to withdraw from the final day of the S&H Golf Classic because of her injuries, which required hospital treatment.
