Boston University to avoid investing in coal, tar sands
BOSTON (AP) — Boston University officials have announced that the school plans to avoid investing in coal and tar sands in the future in an effort to help combat climate change.
The Boston Globe reports (http://bit.ly/2cnXW47 ) Tuesday’s announcement stopped short of saying that BU would fully divest its holdings in fossil fuel companies as some students and faculty members have called for.
BU President Robert Brown said in a letter to the school community that the board of trustees decided last week to commit to the move on a “best-effort basis.”
The announcement didn’t include specifics regarding how much of BU’s endowment is invested in interests linked to coal and tar sands.
Sophomore Masha Vernik says many students wish the university went further and don’t believe this is a serious promise for change.
