Woman Foils Kidnapping By Crashing Car Into Store

October 26, 1987

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ A 67-year-old woman foiled a gunman’s attempt to kidnap her and her son by smashing her car into the front of a store and screaming at passers-by to chase the fleeing man, police and witnesses said.

″That woman made a great move in doing what she did,″ said Ernest Padgett, one of the bystanders who chased the suspect.

No one as injured.

Edna Mae Shuemake and her son, Luther Shuemake Jr., 33, were putting packages in her car Saturday when a gunman ordered them into the vehicle and demanded to be taken to another part of town.

She offered the man money and told him to take the car, but he forced the two into the car, climbed into the back seat and told her to drive.

Mrs. Shuemake spotted a break in oncoming traffic, stepped on the gas, crossed a concrete median and crashed into the front of a convenience store.

Then she jumped out of her car screaming, ″He’s trying to kill us,″ and pointed to the gunman in the back seat, said Padgett and witness David Williamson.

The gunman jumped out of the car and fled.

Padgett and Williamson chased the gunman into nearby woods until he shot at them. They summoned police and a man was captured a short time later.

Dale Anthony Musico, 26, of Jacksonville, was being held today in the Duval County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond on two counts of kidnapping, one count of armed robbery and one count of aggravated battery, police said.
