RI bishop returns to Twitter to criticize state lawmakers
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence’s Roman Catholic bishop has criticized Catholic lawmakers and Gov. Gina Raimondo for their support of a bill that would codify Roe v. Wade protections in state law.
Bishop Thomas Tobin argues on Twitter that the expectation that the landmark Supreme Court case will be overturned is “a smoke screen to expand abortion in RI.” The Providence Journal reports he directed another tweet at Catholic Democratic politicians like Raimondo, urging them to reject all abortion rights bills.
Tobin previously quit Twitter last summer, saying it had become a distraction and obstacle for his spiritual life.
The Providence diocese said in a statement that Tobin is back on the online platform “because he recognizes the potential value it has, along with the pitfalls.”
