Berney Wins U.S. Snowboard Title

NEWRY, Maine (AP) _ Rob Berney overtook first-run leader Ian Price to capture his second national giant slalom title Thursday and reigning world snowboard champion Sondra VanErt collected her fourth national title.

VanErt, of Ketchum, Idaho, won the gold medalist in the giant slalom at the 1997 World Championships, but had a disappointing finish at the Olympics.

She won her fourth title in a time of 2 minutes, 11.09 seconds, beating out Stacia Hookom of Edwards, Colo., who finished in 2:11.94.

In the men’s race, Berney, of Whitefish, Mont., took the gold medal in 2:02.01.

Price, of Manchester Center, Vt., was second in 2:02.25.

Third place went to former world champion Jeff Greenwood of Granby, Conn., who had a time of 2:02.78.
