3 officers appeal firings in timesheet fraud inquiry

August 10, 2019

MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) — Three Mississippi police officers are appealing their firings as an investigation continues into whether they submitted false timesheets.

Meridian Police Chief Benny Dubose says the officers, who had been on unpaid leave, were fired May 16.

Dubose tells The Meridian Star that the officers are appealing to the city’s civil service commission. That body will decide if firings were justified or if officers should get their jobs back. Both Dubose and state Auditor Shad White’s office declined to name the officers.

The chief says the auditor’s office is examining potential crimes, while the city acted on violations of police department and city policies.

City Councilman Weston Lindemann says officers are alleged to have submitted fraudulent time sheets.

Dubose says the auditor will determine if the officers must repay the city.
