China Floods Kill 11, Strand 700

May 16, 1998

BEIJING (AP) _ Heavy rains have inundated farmlands, caused landslides and swept away bridges in flooding that has killed at least 11 people in southeast China, state-run media reported.

More than 700 people were stranded as three days of heavy rains cut off roads and rail lines along the upper reaches of the Min River in Fujian province, the Xinhua News Agency reported late Friday.

The flooding forced 200 factories to shut down, damaged hundreds of dikes, destroyed 20 bridges and swamped over 2,400 acres of farmland in a dozen counties and towns near Nanping city, 900 miles south of Beijing, Xinhua said.

Economic losses totaled nearly $24 million, the news agency said.

The report did not provide details on the deaths.
