BC-MN--Minnesota Weekend Exchange Digest, MN
Here are the Minnesota AP Member Exchange Features for Nov. 10-12:
ROCHESTER, Minn. — A Minnesota woman is giving apples from her backyard to a local food bank. A gentle thud can be heard every time an apple from one of Kelsey Johnson’s 30 backyard trees falls and hits the ground. But the northwest Rochester homeowner said she can’t possibly use all of the thousands of Honeycrisps and Connell Reds. So, when a friend suggested she give Channel One Food Bank a call, she thought that was a perfect fit. By Katie Lauer, Post-Bulletin. SENT IN ADVANCE: 569 words, photos.
DULUTH, Minn. — Nordic skiers young and old recently gathered in Duluth to hear from an Olympic champion. Jessie Diggins helped win America’s first Olympic gold medal in Nordic skiing earlier this year in South Korea, when she sprinted to gold in the team relay. But to many of the skiers on hand at a ski chalet at the base of Spirit Mountain — the example Diggins has set, win or lose — is equally meaningful. By Dan Kraker, Minnesota Public Radio. EXCHANGE-TEEN CATTLE OWNER
KASSON, Minn. — A Minnesota teen has found her calling in cattle. Mollie Allen is a winner in the Minnesota Beef competition in which she was awarded a Simmental-Angus calf to add to her herd. The high school junior won, in part, by writing an essay explaining why she needed a heifer and how it would improve her life. Allen’s new calf, named Piper, will join Lonette and Windchime on her grandpa’s farm and begin a regimen of conditioning that could lead her to the show ring. By Randi Kallas, Agri News. VIRGINIA, Minn. — A Minnesota veteran will be featured in a Netflix documentary series. Lyle Conaway will tell the story of Hill 749 in “Medal of Honor,” which will be released this month on the streaming service Netflix. The series portrays the stories of eight recipients of the Medal of Honor. By Angie Riebe, Mesabi Daily News. SENT IN ADVANCE: 1590 words, photo.
