Shouting ‘Yahoo,’ Man Jumps To Death From Bridge
COUPEVILLE, Wash. (AP) _ A man shouted ″yahoo″ and jumped to his death from a 140-foot bridge after telling his drinking buddies that he’d leaped from higher elevations, a sheriff’s officer said Sunday.
The man leaped Saturday afternoon off the Deception Pass Bridge north of Oak Harbor. A search with boats and a helicopter failed to turn up the body. Witnesses said the man was pulled down in a whirlpool, said Island County sheriff’s officer Sandi Quade.
Recreational divers said they would search for the body in the rough, 300- foot-deep waters that swirl between Whidbey and Fidalgo islands about 55 miles northwest of Seattle, Quade said.
The man, aged 19 or 20, had been drinking and sightseeing with two friends. They stopped at the bridge, a popular tourist site, and started talking about his previous jumps, Quade said.
Witnesses said the man let out an exuberant yell and ″was having a good time while he was going,″ Quade said. The friends saw him surface briefly and then disappear, she said.
