TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A metal scrap yard caught fire in Tacoma, sending huge plumes of smoke billowing into the air.

The News Tribune reported the blaze started about 2 a.m. Monday. By 8 a.m., crews had extinguished the flames but were still trying to cool down the scrap metal.

Investigators are working to determine what started the fire and authorities warned people to avoid inhaling fumes if they were in the air.

The state Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection Agency are responding to monitor the air.
