HALLE, Germany (AP) _ Second-seeded Roger Federer beat Hendrik Dreekmann 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 Monday to advance to the second round of the Gerry Weber Open.
Federer, playing his first match of the season on grass, struggled with his return on the wet court.
``The first set was frustrating. It was a negative situation because the court was slippery. But the first match on grass is always special, you have to get used to rushing the net,″ Federer said.
American Peter Sampras, a seven-time Wimbledon winner, is scheduled to play Tuesday.
In other matches Monday, Germany’s Alexander Popp, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist in 2000, beat Romania’s Razvan Sabau, 7-5, 6-3; Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer won for just the fifth time in 22 matches, defeating countryman Lars Burgsmueller, 6-2, 6-2.
