WINTERSET, Iowa (AP) _ Here is a thumbnail sketch of Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin:
Harkin was born Nov. 19, 1939, in Cumming, Iowa, son of Patrick and Frances Harkin, and he attended schools in Cumming and Dexter, graduating from West Des Moines Dowling High School in 1958.
Graduated from Iowa State University in 1962. Received a law degree from Catholic University of America in 1972.
Served as an aide to U.S. Rep. Neal Smith, D-Iowa, and as a Navy pilot from 1962-1967. Member of the Naval Reserve 1968-1974.
A lawyer for Polk County Legal Aid Society. Ran for seat from southwest Iowa’s 5th Congressional District in 1972, and lost to incumbent Republican Bill Scherle. Won the seat in 1974 and served 10 years in the House.
Ousted incumbent Republican Sen. Roger Jepsen in 1984, and won a second six-year term in 1990, defeating Republican Rep. Tom Tauke in the most expensive political campaign in the state’s history.
Married to Ruth Raduenz Harkin for 23 years. Two daughters, Amy, 15, and Jennifer, 9. Ruth Harkin is an attorney affiliated with a Washington law firm.
