Castillo OKs $2.2M Marlins Deal

February 8, 2001

MIAMI (AP) _ Florida Marlins second baseman Luis Castillo agreed Wednesday to a $2.2 million, one-year contract Wednesday just before the scheduled start of his arbitration hearing.

Castillo hit a club-record .334 last season with 62 stolen bases, most in the major leagues. He also had just two homers and 17 RBIs, batting .211 with runners in scoring position.

``I’m glad we were able to avoid arbitration,″ general manager Dave Dombrowski said. ``We expect a big year from Luis.″

Castillo had requested a salary of $2.6 million, and the Marlins had offered $1.95 million.

The Marlins are scheduled to go to arbitration next week with closer Antonio Alfonseca, who led the majors last season with 45 saves. He has asked for $3.15 million, and the Marlins countered with $2.35 million.
