NEW YORK (AP) _ Reliever Jeff Nelson, who leads New York Yankees pitchers with 36 appearances this season, was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of back trouble.
The Yankees made the move before beginning their interleague series against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. Reliever Mike Buddie, who pitched briefly for the Yankees this season, was recalled from Triple-A Columbus.
Nelson is 5-3 with two saves and a 4.54 ERA. The right-handed middleman last pitched Wednesday night at Atlanta.
Nelson has been bothered by pain in his lower back. The Yankees were concerned he was not getting enough time to heal because he frequently was warming up in the bullpen.
``It’s for safety’s sake,″ Yankees manager Joe Torre said. ``We thought to quiet this back thing it would be best to sit him down.″
