Jeannette grad Sanders added to St. Francis (Pa.) football roster

Former Jeannette star athlete Gio Vonne Sanders was officially placed on the St. Francis (Pa.) football roster on Thursday.

The 2017 graduate is listed as a defensive back and slot back.

Sanders, a football player and all-state wrestler, was going to attend Lackawanna, a high profile junior college in Scranton. But he never enrolled, instead heading to St. Francis in Loretto, an FCS Division I program that plays in the Northeast Conference.

Sanders started his collegiate path when he first considered Palmetto Prep in Georgia for football, then decided to wrestle at Pitt.

Then he said he’d transfer to Lackawanna to start his football career. But he changed his mind.

Sanders was a standout quarterback and defensive back at Jeannette. He was a silver medalist in wrestling as a junior.

Sanders threw for 1,531 yards and 14 TDs, rushed for 753 yards and nine scores and made 80 tackles as a junior, and threw for 1,570 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushed for 563 yards and 12 scores as a senior.
