Officer Leads Four People From Burning Home
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) _ A policeman on his way to direct traffic at one burning house spotted another in flames, and led four people to safety before controlling the blaze with a garden hose, authorities said.
Ty Montoya, 23, kicked in the door of the house early Friday and dragged 72-year-old Gabriel Viegas outside. Montoya, who has been on the force two years, went back inside twice more, and led three other residents outside.
Thanks to Montoya’s efforts, ″the fire never really took hold,″ said fire Capt. Jess Campos. Campos said the fire started in the fireplace, which contained leaves, a log and trash. Damage to the home was estimated at $3,500.
Firefighters stationed nearest the home were unavailable because they were responding to the first fire. That fire, which broke out in a garage, resulted in no injuries but caused $26,000 damage, officials said.
