Guatemalan Held in American’s Death
GUATEMALA CITY (AP) _ A fugitive wanted in connection with the kidnapping and slaying of an American woman has been caught, police said Saturday.
Rigoberto Antonio Morales Barrientos, 23, was captured Thursday in El Tejar, 16 miles west of Guatemala City, four days after breaking out of prison, police said.
Morales, a Guatemalan, was first arrested on May 28, and was being held for trial on kidnapping and murder charges.
Police allege his gang kidnapped Danita Gonzalez Plank de Orellana, 32, of Philadelphia, and her 6-month-old daughter Jan. 6 near Quezaltenango, 68 miles west of the capital.
Soon after, the baby was found alive inside a cardboard box.
Gonzalez Plank’s body was found eight days later near Quezaltenango. She had been shot in the head.
