Makinen Wins Monte Carlo Rally
MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) _ Finland’s Tommi Makinen on Sunday won the Monte Carlo rally for the third straight year after race leader Colin McRae of Britain pulled out because of mechanical problems.
Makinen, a four-time world champion for Mitsubishi, finished the three-day course over slick, snowy Alpine roads about a minute ahead of his closest competitor, Ford driver Carlos Sainz of Spain. Another Ford driver, Francois Delecour of France, was third.
McRae abandoned the rally Sunday because of accelerator trouble. The Ford driver had finished Saturday’s second leg with a 3.5-second lead over Makinen.
The rally, which started Friday, is the first of 14 events in the 2001 World Rally Championship. The race covers 1,084 miles.
