West homers to help Dragons clinch OVC title

COAL GROVE, Ohio — Brennen West hit a two-run home run to help Fairland beat Coal Grove and clinch outright the Ohio Valley Conference championship.

The Dragons (16-6 overall, 12-2 OVC) broke a 2-2 tie with seven runs in the fifth inning.

West went 2-for-3, as did Bryan Defoe. Gavin Hunt was 3-for-4. Alex Rogers was 2-for-5. Dacoda Chapman drove in two. Garrett Looney was the winning pitcher. Nate Harmon went 2-for-4 for Coal Grove.

BUFFALO 11, HUNTINGTON ST. JOE 5: Hunter Massey went 2-for-3 with four RBI to lead the Bison to a victory over the Irish in the Class A, Region IV, Section 2 tournament in Buffalo, West Virginia. Preston Tucker was 2-for-4 with three RBI. David Whittington was 3-for-4 and Seth Landers 2-for-4. Dylan Jividen was the winning pitcher. Hunter Eplin and Connor Joseph each had two hits for St. Joe, which hit into four double plays. Cory Sweeney was 2-for-3 with three RBI. The Irish play Tolsia at home at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

LAWRENCE COUNTY 4, PAINTSVILLE 3: Jackson Feltner hit a walk-off home run to lift the Bulldogs over the Tigers. The homer was Feltner’s 11th, a school record for a season.

COAL GROVE 7, IRONTON ST. JOE 4: The Hornets scored three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth in a victory over the visiting Flyers. Nate Harmon homered for Coal Grove.

ROCK HILL 9, IRONTON 3: Brayden Friend hit a three-run homer and Nick Blankenship went 4-for-4 as the Redmen (15-5) beat the home-standing Fighting Tigers (9-12). Jake Bragg was 2-for-3 and Logan Hankins was the winning pitcher.

LOGAN (OHIO) 4, GALLIA ACADEMY 2: Trey Slack had four hits to pace the Chieftains to a win over the Blue Devils in Centenary, Ohio.

MEIGS 5, ALEXANDER 4: Wesley Smith’s two-run single in the sixth rallied the Marauders (10-10) by the visiting Spartans.

RACELAND 7, WEST CARTER 1: Hunter Lacks drove in three runs and Kirk Pence pitched a complete game as the Rams (22-5) defeated the Comets (17-11) in Olive Hill, Kentucky.

ROCK HILL 13, SOUTHEASTERN 3: The Redwomen won their first post-season game since 2013, defeating the Panthers in the sectional tournament opener.

COAL GROVE 8, FAIRLAND 5: The Hornets broke a 5-5 tie with one run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to defeat the visiting Dragons. Amber Schwartz went 2-for-3 with two RBI for Coal Grove. Addi Dillow was 2-for-4. Kaleigh Murphy struck out 10 in earning the win. Chloe Cremeans went 2-for-3 for Fairland.

IRONTON 1, ROCK HILL 0: Freshman Keegan Moore struck out 12 in a three-hit shutout as the hosting Fighting Tigers (22-1) beat the Redwomen (14-6) to finish 14-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Haylee Stevens singled in Demi Sands with the winning run in the sixth. Kylie Howard went 2-for-3 for Rock Hill.

WAHAMA 8, RAVENSWOOD 0: The White Falcons (26-1) won their 22nd in a row with a home rout of the Red Devils (18-11) in the Class A, Region IV, Section 1 tournament. Hannah Rose was the winning pitcher and went 2-for-2. Victoria VanMatre was 2-for-2 and Emily VanMatre 2-for-3.

LUCASVILLE VALLEY 12, IRONTON ST. JOE 1: The Indians scored 12 unearned runs in a sectional tournament victory over the Flyers in Ironton.

PORTSMOUTH WINS TWO: Kylee Montgomery pitched a no-hitter as the Trojans defeated Lynchburg-Clay 10-0 Tuesday in a sectional semifinal. Portsmouth faces Leesburg-Fairfield at 5 p.m. Friday for a Division III sectional title. Jaclyn Bautista and Shaya Kidder each had two RBI. On Monday, Madison Perry’s lead-off home run in the bottom of the first gave the Trojans a 1-0 triumph over South Point. Montgomery struck out seven, walked none and allowed three hits to earn the win.

NITRO 4, POINT PLEASANT 3: Kerrigan Moore scored the winning run on a passed ball to give the Wildcats (15-14) a victory over the home-standing Big Blacks (16-7) in the Class AA, Region IV, Section 1 tournament. Winning pitcher Lena Elkins had two hits.

MEIGS 5, ALEXANDER 2: Jadyn Floyd’s two-RBI double helped the Marauders (12-15) beat the Spartans in Rocksprings, Ohio. Winning pitcher Breanna Zirkle was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

RIVER VALLEY 6, VINTON COUNTY 5: The fifth-seeded Raiders (12-11) upset the fourth-seeded Vikings (13-9) in sectional tournament play in McArthur, Ohio. Chloe Gee’s two-out double in the seventh inning drove in Brooklyn Sizemore and Grace Hash to win it.
