Toys for Tots, local businesses are teaming up to make kids smile

November 22, 2018

Kingwood resident Louis Luethold revealed that the founders of Toys for Tots were a band of military bikers post-World War II.

“1947,” he said. “So that’s been 71 years.”

As the name suggests, Toys for Tots aims to gather playthings donated by local residents and — since businesses are also involved — customers, all of which will then be given to children at churches, orphanages and hospitals.

“I don’t sit in a rocking chair,” Luethold said of his motivation for carrying out this initiative.

As long as the toys are unwrapped or lightly used, the former Marine said it’s fair game. For this year, he said he’s aiming to fill five 53-footer trailers.

“Probably six,” he then said after some recalculations.

The last day to drop off toys is Dec. 14, Luethold said. Afterward they will be transported to and distributed at George R. Brown Convention Center and by Houston Children’s Charities.

The following are the businesses that will serve as collection sites:

A few businesses will use events hosted on their grounds to collect toys as well. Most are available to the public — Luethold said Coaches Sports Grill will have an event on Dec. 8; Time Out Tavern will have a “Toys for Tots Tailgate” on Dec. 15 — and some are in-company — Jet Lending, LLC will collect toys at its networking event on Nov. 28 in Stafford’s Redneck Country Club, he shared.

Luethold said that this is the first year Tin Roof BBQ and Harley-Davidson of Kingwood are participating in this program. Also involved are the TSA and Tellepsen Builders; the latter is donating 1,000 bicycles.

Additionally, toys can be dropped off at Luethold’s house, 1618 Chestnut Ridge, in the Forest Cove subdivision in Kingwood. He can be contacted at 713-703-8790.

“This is the most rewarding place in the world as far as charity,” he said of Houston. “I don’t care where you’re going in the United States.”
