Man In Critical Condition After Detonating Bomb
LAWTON, Okla. (AP) _ A man who ″literally exploded″ was hospitalized today after he detonated a homemade bomb when a police officer questioned him about a domestic argument, authorities said.
James Sherman Adams, 49, was in critical condition at Comanche Memorial Hospital, a hospital official said.
Policeman David Schucker, 24, was treated and released after suffering minor cuts from the explosion Monday night, hospital spokeswoman Kelly Brack said.
Schucker responded to a report of domestic disturbance and stopped a vehicle reportedly involved, police Maj. Robert Martin said.
″After stopping that vehicle, during a routine conversation with the driver, the driver literally exploded,″ Martin said.
The man told Schucker that he had an explosive device and set the device to go off in a few seconds, police Capt. Bob Adamson said. The man apparently was upset because his estranged wife had obtained a protective order.
Shotgun shells, screws, a pager, down from the lining of a jacket and wires were scattered by the explosion, Martin said.
