Baby Killed After Falling Out Of Car
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ An 18-month-old girl was run over and killed by the car she had been riding in when the driver slammed on the brakes and a door flew open, sending her falling onto the pavement, police said.
The child’s mother and the driver were arrested after the accident Saturday that killed Belinda Escamilla of San Jose. She was pronounced dead at a hospital, said police Officer Keith Crowther.
Catherine Escamilla, 26, a passenger, was booked on charges of child endangerment and being under the influence of PCP, he said.
Driver Brett McGrath, 27, of San Jose, apparently tried to stop to avoid a collision with a car ahead of him when the baby fell out and was run over, police said.
He was arrested Saturday night at his home and booked on charges of manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, and driving with a suspended license, Crowther said.
