Brain Dead Woman Gives Birth, Then Pulled Off Life-Support Systems
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) _ A woman declared brain dead six weeks ago delivered a healthy baby and died soon after when she was taken off life-support machines, a hospital spokesman said.
Tracy Bucher, 31, gave birth Monday by Caesarean section to a 4-pound, 11- ounce boy at St. Joseph’s Hospital, said the spokesman, Bob Vaccarelli.
Doctors disconnected Bucher’s life support immediately after the birth, he said.
Bucher suffered a cerebral hemorrhage six weeks ago when she was about 6 months pregnant. The cause of the hemorrhage is unknown, Vaccarelli said.
Her husband, Jim, and parents decided to keep her organs functioning artificially so the baby could mature and be born without birth defects.
The newborn will remain in the hospital for one to two weeks, Vaccarelli said. There were no complications in the birth and the infant was ″in excellent condition,″ he said.
