JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA, Spain (AP) _ French driver Rene Arnoux suffered a minor injury Monday while testing his Ligier formula one car at Jerez race track.

A track spokeman said Arnoux’s car left the track in the first curve after the start and crashed against a wall of tires. He hurt his right ankle but the injury was not serious. The Ligier was severely damaged.

The spokesman said Arnoux only had one car, and he and his racing team left the track and will return to France soon.


NEW YORK (AP) - Pittsburgh’s Jerome Lane, the nation’s leading rebounder, has been named Big East Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Lane scored a total of 34 points and grabbed 33 rebounds last week in victories over Syracuse and Boston College. The sophomore forward hit 13 of 24 shots from the field in the two games.


WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Don McLaren scored the winning goal with three minutes left to play to lead Canada-88, the Canadian Olympic team, to a 3-2 victory over Poland in an exhibition hockey game Monday in Lodz, the official Polish news agency PAP reported.

Canada jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Mark Habscheid in the 18th minute and Gord Sherven in the 19th minute.

The Polish nationals tied the match on goals by Jan Stopczyk in the second period and Janusz Adamiec in the third period before McLaren scored the deciding goal.

The Canadian team is composed of mostly young amateur players with no NHL experience. The next game with the Polish squad is scheduled for Tuesday in the town of Oswiecim.

A crowd of 4,500 watched the game Monday.
