Four Young Children Die in House Fire
GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) _ Fire swept through a one-story brick house Monday, killing four young children who were found huddled in one bed, authorities said.
Three other people who were in the house escaped, and one suffered cuts and smoke inhalation.
Pronounced dead at the scene by the Harrison County coroner were Sonya Hartfield, six months; Allen Green Jr., 2; Samantha Hartfield, 3; and Tina Hartfield, 4.
The mother was identified as Sandra Hartfield, who left the house before the fire began to take a friend to work, authorities said.
One of the adults reported hearing an explosion before the fire broke out around 6 a.m., but did not see or smell any smoke, said Bill Suckow, chief of the Orange Grove Volunteer Fire Department.
The adult said he had kicked in the children’s door and found the room full of smoke and flames, Suckow said.
