Federal jury finds former prison guard guilty of bribery
ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) — A federal jury has found a former corrections officer at the prison in Pollock guilty of accepting bribes to smuggle contraband.
U.S. Attorney David C. Joseph, in a news release this week, said 38-year-old Byron A. Wyatt, of Marksville, was found guilty of two counts of bribery of public officials and witnesses.
Joseph says jurors returned the verdict after deliberating about an hour-and-a-half.
Evidence admitted at trial revealed that Wyatt worked as a corrections officer at the Federal Correctional Complex where he accepted thousands of dollars in bribes from a prisoner in 2014 in exchange for smuggling contraband into the prison.
Wyatt faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count. Sentencing has been set for July 13.
