Newborn Kidnapped by Woman Posing as Diaper Saleswoman
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) _ Police searched Thursday for a 13-day-old baby kidnapped from a shopping center by a woman posing as a saleswoman for a disposable diaper company.
″I want my baby back. I want to know how he is,″ said Migdalia Cortes de Canales, 19, in an interview with The San Juan Star, an English-langua ge daily. ″I’m desperate.″
Her newborn son, Carlos Luis Canales, was abducted Tuesday by a woman posing as a Pampers sales representative at a shopping mall in suburban Carolina, police said. The woman told the couple the children had won a contest to be in a commercial, she said.
″She said they (the Pampers company) would supply diapers, clothing for the children and that they would even pay us for letting them appear in the commercials. We are in financial need,″ the baby’s father, Luis Felix Canales, 20, told the newspaper.
The couple have two other children, Luann, 3, and Luis, 1.
Police spokesman Tony Santiago said Thursday detectives were checking tips from dozens of callers after the FBI circulated a composite sketch of the woman, believed to be in her 40s.
The couple said the woman went to their home April 27, took down their names and said their children had won a contest and would be photographed Tuesday at the shopping center.
They said the woman drove them to the mall Tuesday and while the parents prepared the children to be photographed, she offered to hold the crying infant in a waiting area.
″After 20 minutes, we realized she had left with the baby,″ the newspaper quoted Mrs. Canales as saying.
