Dunkleberger transferring to Iowa State
Ben Dunkleberger, a 2018 graduate of Lake Mills High School, announced Friday on Twitter that he plans to transfer to Iowa State over the winter to join the football program. Dunkleberger is currently attending Penn, where he was intending to be a track and field athlete.
Dunkleberger guided the Lake Mills football team to a pair of Level 3 playoff appearances the past two seasons. As a senior, he threw for 2,777 yards and 36 touchdowns and ran for 1,416 yards and 23 touchdowns.
He won state track and field titles in both the triple jump and long jump during his career and still holds the Division 2 state record in the triple jump at 47 feet. But, as he announced regarding his return to football on Twitter, “This game is where my heart belongs.”
It wasn’t a surprise to Lake Mills football coach Dan Ferkovich, who applauded the decision.
“That’s awesome,” Ferkovich said. “He called me. Before he announced it, he called me and said, ‘Don’t say I told you so,’ … He said he missed it. Football was his favorite sport. It always was. With him being a little undersized, he was worried about getting hurt. But you take a season off, and it’s something you’ve done your whole life … he can play at that level. He was recruited at that level.
“He’ll be fine, knowing his work ethic. I know I personally will be taking some trips to Ames, Iowa.”
