Schmitt Wins Ski Jump Opener

November 27, 1999

KUOPIO, Finland (AP) _ World Cup ski jumping champion Martin Schmitt of Germany won the opening event of the season, which was limited to one jump because of bad weather Saturday night.

Schmitt jumped last and soared 125.5 meters for 123.9 points in his first and only jump. Difficult wind conditions forced the jury to cancel the second round, and the first round results counted for the World Cup.

Andreas Goldberger of Austria finished second with 121.0 meters, 118.8 points, indicating that he is ready for a comeback in the top flight after two mediocre seasons.

Finland’s Matti Hautamaki took third at 124.5 meters for 118.1 points.

Some top jumpers, notably World Cup runner-up Janne Ahonen of Finland, could not master the wind and placed far down. Ahonen was only 37th.

Among other top jumpers, Masahiko Harada of Japan finished 19th and Andreas Widholzl of Austria was 35th.
