Local Endicott Football Players Honored by CCC
Two local members of the Endicott College football program have earned Commonwealth Coast Conference weekly awards, as announced by the league office.
John Kenney of Wilmington was named the CCC Offensive Player and Offensive Rookie of the Week, while George Balian of Burlington received Defensive Player of the Week honors.
In a 27-24 win over Hobart last Saturday, Kenney’s 128 rushing yards were a major factor in the Gulls’ victory. He ran 25 times for a 5.1-yards average with his longest run going for 27 yards. Kenney also had one touchdown and helped seal the game with an 11-yard rush to Hobart’s 4-yard line, allowing his team to run out the clock.
Balian had a career-high 10 tackles against Hobart. Six of his tackles were solo stops, while four others were assisted. Balian also put the punctuation mark on the victory by breaking up Hobart’s final pass attempt of the game.
The Saint Michael’s College Department of Athletics inducted its 2018 Athletic Hall of Fame class with six new members being enshrined at the 30th annual banquet.
Among those inducted was Megan Lyons Melanson, Class of ’05, the women’s ice hockey program’s all-time leading scorer.
Melanson, who hails from Boxboro and lives in Londonderry, N.H., is the first four-year women’s ice hockey player to earn induction. She was the first great player at Saint Michael’s, joining the program during its first full season of varsity competition in 2001-02.
Not only did she graduate holding or tied for 11 school records, but Melanson still claims nine records more than a decade after her graduation. She had nearly half (48.6 percent) of the goals scored by the Purple Knights in her career.
