September 28, 2018

A real estate firm, a social services agency and a debt collection business took top honors Thursday night in the Hearst Connecticut Media Group annual Top Workplaces awards.

In all, Hearst named 50 employers as Top Workplaces in three size categories in the 8th year of the awards.

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England Properties took the top honors among large employers with 500 or more employees. Berkshire, with 730 employees in Fairfield, New Haven and Litchfield counties, has its regional headquarters in Wallingford and is a previous winner of the top award.

Family & Children’s Agency, a nonprofit social services provider, won the top award for midsize companies with 150 to 499 employees. The Norwalk-based agency, with 200 employees, offers a wide range of services and won the top award from Hearst in 2014 and again in 2016.

Eastern Account System, a debt collector, won top honors in the small employers category for companies with 35 to 149 employees. Eastern, with its main office in Danbury, competed for the first time this year and has a staff of 51.

Paul Barbetta, publisher and CEO of Hearst Connecticut Media Group, congratulated the winners at a dinner at Waterview in Monroe. The awards are based on surveys of employees, conducted by Energage, a Philadelphia-based research and engagement firm.

Among special award winners, the Top Leadership award in the three size categories went to John Cuilla, CEO of Webster Bank, in the large-employers category; Carolyn Stanworth, CEO of BL Cos. of Meriden, an engineering and design firm, in the midsize employers category; and Ross Bacarella, CEO of BTX Global Logistics in Shelton, in the small employers category.

Employers competing in the awards must have at least 35 employees in the three counties, New Haven, Fairfield and Litchfield. They can be private, publicly traded, nonprofit, government agencies or partnerships.
