STAMFORD — A man was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and without a license while there was a child without a car seat in the van.

Rigoberto Contreras, 49, was arrested on Saturday night when officers saw the Nissan Quest he was driving had a defective muffler and took a sudden turn into a parking lot, police said in a statement. Officers also saw that there was a child who wasn’t secured in a car seat in the vehicle.

Contreras, who had a two-year-old child and two other people in the van, did not have a drivers license and smelled of alcohol, police said. He failed two out of three field sobriety tests and a breathalyzer test registered more than doublethe legal limit.

Contreras was charged with operating under the influence, driving without a license, traveling with a child under four years old unrestrained and driving with a defective muffler, according to police. He was issued a $100 bond and is due in court on Aug. 17.
