Trail Blazers Sign Rookie Wells

January 25, 1999

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) _ The Portland Trail Blazers signed rookie guard Bonzi Wells to a three-year contract Monday and cut three players.

Financial terms were not disclosed for Wells, who was acquired from the Detroit Pistons last week for a conditional first-round pick.

Wells was the 11th overall pick in the draft out of Ball State, where he averaged 22.8 points per game last season and finished his college career as the Mid-American Conference’s No. 1 scorer.

Three other guards were cut by the Blazers: James Blackwell, Ernest Hall and Damian Owens.
