Update: Shelter at Kingwood First Baptist Church on standby
American Red Cross volunteers will be on standby until further notice at the Kingwood First Baptist Church in case anyone needs to seek refuge from heavy rains that have caused flooding. The church is located at 3500 Woodland Hills Drive, Kingwood.
Red Cross and First Baptist volunteers said about 30 residents utilized the shelter Tuesday night and the majority have since left the shelter to check on their homes.
However, Kingwood First Baptist Church has a capacity to hold up 120 people if necessary. The staff will be ready if more residents need refuge this weekend, Shelter Manager Lucy Gebhart said.

All supplies have been provided by the Kingwood First Baptist Church. Officials are not seeking donations right now.
“There’s different ways that we do sheltering. Sometimes a Red Cross opens a shelter, and it’s fully staffed. In this case, a number of the church members have gone go through shelter management with the Red Cross, and they operate the shelter under the rules of the Red Cross,” Gebhart said.
The National Weather Service forecasts about a 50 to 80 percent chance of rain for the rest of the week until Saturday night with heavy rainfalls and winds up to 15 mph.
