RI GOP committee member resigns over new chairwoman

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island Republican State Central Committee member has resigned in protest over the election of the new state GOP chairwoman.

Barbara Ann Fenton, who is the wife of Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, said in a Twitter post on Monday that she was resigning effective immediately over Chairwoman Suzanne Cienki’s “attitude and comments” toward firefighters.

Fenton says her husband offered to resign as well, but she “told him not to.”

Cienki is the subject of a lawsuit involving an East Greenwich town firefighter.

The lawsuit alleges the former Town Council president threatened to remove his genitals and feed them to his dog during a Town Hall meeting.

Cienki declined to comment on pending litigation.

She says Fenton’s resignation is “disappointing.”
