Pennsylvania Turnpike closing this weekend for Somerset bridge work
The Pennsylvania Turnpike will be closed in both directions between the New Stanton and Breezewood interchanges from 11 p.m. Saturday until approximately 5 a.m. Sunday, weather permitting, for bridge work in Somerset, according to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.
This six-hour closure is needed for crews to safely erect steel bridge beams for the new North Center Avenue (state Route 601) bridge, which will carry traffic over the turnpike at milepost 110. Traffic on North Center is using a temporary bridge that spans the turnpike until a permanent overhead bridge is built.
Throughout the evening prior to the closure, announcements will be made inside the North Somerset and the North Midway service plazas to warn motorists that they will not be permitted to drive after 11 p.m. until the bridge work is complete.
Westbound traffic exiting the turnpike at the Breezewood Interchange and eastbound traffic exiting the turnpike at the New Stanton Interchange will be given suggested detours. Motorists may enter the turnpike going westbound at the Somerset Interchange and also at the Donegal Interchange. Motorists will be permitted to enter the toll highway going eastbound at the Bedford Interchange.
