Sex assault charge against Nedved dropped

February 4, 1997

NEW WESTMINSTER, British Columbia (AP) _ A sexual assault charge against Pittsburgh Penguins forward Peter Nedved was dropped Monday.

The Crown had initially decided to proceed with the charges following a preliminary hearing.

But ``additional information came to light″ and resulted in a stay of proceedings, regional Crown counsel Austin Cullen said. A stay means the charge is dropped if it is not reactivated within 12 months.

Nedved was charged after a woman from the Vancouver suburb of Coquitlam said she was assaulted in her home in 1994. Nedved’s agent said his client wasn’t even in the Vancouver area at the time of the alleged attack.

Nedved began his NHL career in 1990 with the Vancouver Canucks after being chosen second overall in the NHL draft. He has also played for the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers.

Cullen said he and David Crossin, a senior counsel in private practice in Vancouver, reviewed the new information and concluded it justified a stay of proceedings.
