Government Holds Up Shipment of Nuclear Material to Iran

February 6, 1992

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) _ The government, reportedly acting at the request of President Bush, has halted a shipment of nuclear material to Iran until that country promises not to develop nuclear weapons.

″We are waiting for Iran to sign safeguards and conduct its nuclear affairs in a way that permits exportation,″ said Argentina’s foreign minister, Guido di Tella.

The $18 million contact with the National Institute for Applied Research was described by director Tomas Busch as being for tool-making equipment.

But a legislator from the southwestern province of Rio Negro, where the institute is located, said the contract calls for the shipment of at least one small-scale research reactor.

The suspension was disclosed last week after the material had arrived in Buenos Aires and was being prepared for export. Di Tella commented Monday.

Newspapers said President Bush had requested the suspension of the contract.
