Sheriff: Driver fleeing police crashed into home, killed 1
SENECA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a 19-year-old driver fleeing a South Carolina Highway Patrol checkpoint crashed into a house and killed a sleeping woman.
Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw tells the Anderson Independent-Mail that El Asia Hassian Muhammad fled the alcohol checkpoint Monday night and initiated a brief pursuit that ended when he crashed into the Seneca home. Coroner Karl Addis says the car landed on top of 39-year-old Vanessa Leanna Neimeyer, who was visiting the area to celebrate her grandparents’ 68th anniversary.
The sheriff says Muhammad fled the car on foot but was soon caught by troopers. A teen passenger remained in the car and hasn’t been charged. Muhammad was taken to the county detention center. He’s charged with failing to stop for blue lights resulting in death.
