Moose moved away from road, but calf escapes capture

January 2, 2019

POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) — Wildlife officials in southeastern Idaho used a tranquilizer dart to capture a cow moose near an interstate but were unable to capture its calf.

Idaho Fish and Game spokeswoman Jennifer Jackson tells the Idaho State Journal that officers captured the cow moose Monday but couldn’t dart the calf and didn’t want to risk chasing it onto nearby Interstate 86.

Jackson says the calf is big and healthy and officials hope it will make it through the winter fine because of its body condition and size. She says officers will continue looking for the calf to dart it and reunite it with its mother.

Jackson says the cow moose was relocated to an undisclosed area.

Two moose have been hit on roads in southeastern Idaho in the last month.
