September 20, 2018

ROME, N.Y. (AP) — The federal defense appropriations bill for 2019 has more than $245 million earmarked for the Air Force Research Laboratory in central New York.

U.S. senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, who represent New York state, say the bill has passed the Senate and is expected to pass the House in the coming weeks.

Located at the former Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, the lab is considered the nation’s premier research organization for cyber and intelligence technologies. One of its primary goals is gathering and processing cyber intelligence and enhancing the nation’s cybersecurity infrastructure. Rome Lab also develops information technology for air, space and ground systems.

Rome Lab is an important economic component of the local economy, too, employing over 1,200 workers with a payroll of $140 million.
