Mets Recall RHP Pat Strange
NEW YORK (AP) _ The Mets recalled right-hander Pat Strange from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday, giving them 12 pitchers on their staff.
Although he was primarily a starter at Norfolk, Strange is expected to work long relief for the Mets. He was recalled for two days in April but did not appear in a game.
Mets manager Art Howe said the bullpen needed help, even though teams do not usually carry 12 pitchers.
``I think we’re going to stick with it for a while, we needed pitching,″ Howe said. ``We’ve been going to the well (the bullpen) an awful lot lately, and I think guys are getting a little tired.″
``With Strange and Jason Middlebrook out there, we have two guys with some length.″
New York has used relievers 98 times in their first 35 games, and the bullpen is 2-9 with 10 saves in 15 opportunities.
Strange was 3-1 with a 3.34 ERA in six games at Norfolk, five of them starts. He had 20 strikeouts in 29 2-3 innings.
He takes the roster spot of catcher Jason Phillips, who was sent to Norfolk following a loss to San Diego on Friday.
