MetroStars Get Chile’s Marcelo Vega

April 9, 1998

SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) _ Marcelo Vega, a playmaking midfielder who is a member of Chile’s national team, was assigned to the New York-New Jersey MetroStars roster on Thursday.

``Marcelo provides us with a perfect offensive weapon, someone who can hold the ball in the middle of the field, direct the flow of traffic and make those penetrating passes that our forwards need to be more productive,″ MetroStars general manager Charlie Stillitano said.

Vega, 26, is expected to join the team in late April and may make his MLS debut on May 6 against Dallas at Giants Stadium.

Vega started in 12 of 16 World Cup qualifying games for Chile, and he is expected to be selected for his country’s World Cup team this summer.

``Hopefully, Marcelo will prove to be the final piece of our offensive puzzle,″ MetroStars coach Alfonso Mondelo said. ``We look to him to organize the center of our midfield and create opportunities for our attackers.″

Vega has created many opportunities for Chile’s high-scoring tandem of Marcelo Salas and Ivan Zamorano.

``My goal here is to bring a championship to the MetroStars,″ Vega said. ``That is what every player plays for, to become a champion.″

The MetroStars have scored only two goals in losing their first two games. They will play their home opener on Saturday against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
