Man ruled incompetent for trial in chicken plant shooting

March 12, 2019

BAY SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) — A judge says a Mississippi man isn’t mentally competent to stand trial in the shooting death of a co-worker at a chicken processing plant.

Jasper County District Attorney Matthew Sullivan tells WDAM-TV that Circuit Court Judge Eddie Bowen ruled earlier this month on Raffell Franklin of Laurel.

Franklin was indicted on charges of first-degree murder and shooting into a motor vehicle in relation to the 2017 death of Eddie Davis. Both worked at the Peco Foods poultry plant in Bay Springs, where the shooting took place in a parking lot.

Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson says Franklin remains jailed until a bed opens for him at the Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield.

Sullivan says Franklin could still face charges in the future if he is restored to competency.
